Derek_Park

Derek's NHS practice is based at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals, which recently merged with the Royal Free Hospital to form one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in the country. He provides a comprehensive service in the generality of Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery and has a sub-specialty interest in surgery of the Foot and Ankle.

Derek qualified in Medicine from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2000. He came to the United Kingdom after his House Officer jobs and completed Basic Surgical Training as a Senior House Officer at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex. He attained the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MRCS) in 2005. In 2006 he was selected for Higher Specialist Training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery on the prestigious Royal Free & Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Stanmore rotation. He attained the Intercollegiate Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery (FRCS) in 2010.

As part of his Orthopaedic training, he worked at some of London’s best hospitals including the Royal Free Hospital, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Barnet Hospital, Whittington Hospital, Southend Hospital, Broomfield Hospital, and Whipps Cross Hospital.

Derek was appointed as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals in January 2014. He is the Clinical Lead for Orthopaedic Trauma in the department.

Specialist fellowships

Derek undertook further sub-specialist training in foot and ankle surgery at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore in 2012, and the Surrey Fellowship at Frimley Park and the Royal Surrey County Hospitals in 2011. He also underwent Fellowship training in Orthopaedic Trauma surgery at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in 2013.

He was awarded the British Orthopaedic Association European Travelling Fellowship in 2012, the British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellowship to India in 2013 and the AO Trauma Fellowship to Germany in 2013.

Research and teaching experience

Derek is involved in translational science research projects with the University of Surrey. He has secured over £10,000 in research grants for various clinical studies.

He has published 13 peer-reviewed papers on the subject of orthopaedic surgery in international scientific journals and has authored textbook chapters in orthopaedics including the European Surgical Orthopaedics and Traumatology Textbook. He is a reviewer for the Bone & Joint Journal.

Derek has a keen interest in teaching and has been Faculty on the Basic Science Course for the FRCS(Orth), and Basic Fracture Management Courses at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.
